62-65 gurus,

I'm considering purchasing a '65 Dart 270 that has been hot rodded.  It has
an LA 318, automatic w/ slap shifter, etc.  The rear end is supposedly 3.88
gears.  Obviously, this is too low for a daily driver, so I'd like to swap
them out.

The carrier is a 489.  I'm wondering if I can just swap in my 8 3/4 from my
'64 Newport.  The Newport's carrier just has an X on it.  I'm guessing that
it's a 741, but I've read about a 657 carrier that's no good to swap with a
489.

What gives?
