I did this on one of my fenders during the summer, only three more to go. :(

You can check out my handy work (yeah right) at
http://www.msnusers.com/64Newport/shoebox.msnw.

As you can see from my pictures, I just left out the bracing on the inside.
Moisture and road salt were trapped between the bracing and the exterior
skin causing the rust to eat through. I figured my way will give water a
path out instead of being trapped between the bracing and the outside panel.
I used 18 ga. steel for the repair, so the added strength from my patch
panel somewhat makes up for the bracing. Those damn body lines took me
about 16 hours to come close. My patch panel had to be in an "S" shape with
a nearly 90 degree crease. Good times.

The Newport is coming along. I am going to go underneath in the spring and
start scraping rust and painting more. I figure that whatever I do to the
car is worthless unless I can slow the rust on the chassis. I never thought
I'd be so intimate with a car in my life, that's for sure.

Take care,
Robert Gideon
