Fuel Tank Venting

I've got a '62 Dodge D100 truck with the fuel tank behind the seat and yesterday I was in there replacing the fuel filler neck hose and grommet. 

While I was in there I noticed that I only have a single line coming from the top of the fuel tank and it heads to the carb. There is no vent line at all. 

Now I'm wondering if I need to use a vented cap? The previous owner had used a very generic looking vented cap, but it looks silly. I purchased a nice chrome/stainless steel one that I thought was Ok to use, but I don't think it is vented. Without a vent line, will a sealed cap work with the non-vented tank? What happens to the gas if it expands in the heat, or what happens when you use fuel up and draw down the tank? What stops the tank vacuum from collapsing, etc?
