Bill, Maybe you did this,? Make sure the kickdown linkage from the carb to the kickdown lever on the trans is adjusted properly!
so that the kick down lever is all the way back to its stop at WOT.

I think I may have fixed the trans problem, either by luck or just taking a
shot in the dark.
I pulled the pan, (again, only 4th time), and looked closely at the rooster
comb where it hits on the neutral safety switch. It wasn't dead center on it
so I turned the adjusting wheel until it was. Moved the shifter back and forth
and checked where it was on the rooster comb. Park was where it should be so
I also check to see where the shift valve was. Not sure exactly where it
should be in the valve body.
I put the shifter in neutral and in park to see if the motor would turn over
and it did so I figured I was close.
I took a chance and put the pan back on, filled it with fluid again. Started
the car, put it in first, it went in gear, put it in second, the RPM changed
as well as the speedo, put it in high gear, it went in also with a big drop
in RPM.
Figured I might as well take her out on the road to test it. The shift
between 1st and 2nd was real quick without much of a RPM drop, (almost like a
close ratio 4-speed would be), shifted into high, it shifted but with a pretty
big lag going in.
Tried it again shifting at about 4000, did the same thing.
Not sure why there is such a big lag going into gear.
I tried moving the adjustment one more hole going the same way I moved it
before. Didn't try it again on the road because it was getting hot again.
(Another problem I'm having even after buying a BeCool radiator.) May have a bad
thermostat. Running a 160 degree one.
Anyway, I'm going to try to readjust the kickdown band to see if that is
where the lag is.

Thanks for all the suggestions and if someone has an idea about the 3rd gear
lag, I'd appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks guys,
Bill C.
