part of the harsh ride is due to Radial tires. The older bias tires had stiffer sidewalls that would flex on bumps and were really part of the suspension design. The radials sidewalls sag like a 60 year old's stomach muscles and there is really little buonce or spring left in the tire. They ride more like a bag of water than air. Mind you they have some advantages but if you really want the old ride you need a set of 8.55 or 8.85 /15s . (or even 9.50/15s)
With radials (which are much more forgiving alignment wise ) the suspension would need a bit more travel and a softer spring rate.  Enough extra travel to at least equal the sidewall flex in the older tires. 
We played around with this a bit when the firestones where having belt problems with radials in the early seventies. I remember one car , my brothers Cougar (74) that was so quiet after putting on a good set of large bias ply he never did change it back. It would almost put you to sleep. 
Uniroyal Tigerpaws were very good as were also some of the big Goodyears. Dominion Royals were the ultimate but like Red Rose Tea they were "only available in Canada"
