swapping out gears

With the old tapered axles (I have a 741 casting rear, tapered axle), how difficult is it to swap out the ring and pinion assembly?  Do I have to pull the axles?
 
Thanks to you guys, I found 3.73:1 ratio gears for the 741...and before I buy them I want to know how much work this will turn into...!  :)
