My '64 had an alternator with 1 field terminal. It worked fine, but
didn't look correct because the previous owner had painted it cast iron
gray. I bought a rebuilt alternator from NAPA and it also had 1 field
terminal. It worked OK for about 100 miles then quit charging. I put
the old one back on and it worked fine. Back to NAPA for another one.
It had the same number on the box, but it has 2 field terminals. I've
read other posts where members have said that the 2 post units wouldn't
charge for them. The corrective action recommended by the Clubhouse
members was to ground the 2nd terminal. I didn't do that. I simply
hooked up the normal terminal and the alternator charged fine, in fact
much higher amperage than the other 2 units. It settled back to a
slightly above zero charge once the battery was fully charged again.

My question is...do I have to ground the 2nd field terminal to prevent
the alternator from being damaged, or am I OK as is? Brian
