Just to expand on this, "flame hardened" or the use of an "induction"
heater on a localized area, will change the hardness of cast iron.  Many
times, two light valve re grinds, or one heavy one, are all it takes to
completely remove the hardened area. So the depth of hardness is quite
thin. With hardened seats installed, a steel seat is then in place. Steel
has different properties than cast iron, so the likelihood of cracks or
wear is greatly reduced. FWIW   Tom
