Neal the 400 motor was mostly used as a smog motor. Shortly after it was
introduced in 72 they started to "detune" it. The early ones came with forged
cranks, but I dont think a cast crank is as bad as everyone claims. I am building
my 400 for my 73 Charger. The 400 has all the benifits of the 383 with bigger
slugs. I dont think I would put it over a 440 for stoutness or possible power
gains but I think it is a great engine to use. They have more and more parts
(pistons) available for them everyday.
