When I was a kid I worked at a chain making factory. We would take a 100
foot coil of loose chain and gently tap it against the concrete floor. If
the welding machine had missed even one link you could easily hear the off
pitch sound. I guess it works for steel cranks too. Mike  63   330

Yeah, I'm a MEchanic. Its a trusted method and any old timer will stand by
