Steel head gaskets
We use them any time we can in the BB Mopars I buy all the nos ones i come accross. They work very well in these engines although the brand X small block does not like them as well but then that is thier problem. 
Next in line is the Felpro Blue which is an excellant gasket however is twice as thick so it lowers compression in an unmachined head. I am not willing to give that up.
Synthetic. 
We have done  quite a bit of real life testing with this stiff. 
It has its advantages but the best place to use it is the Auto trans. It really extends the life of these in Race and hard street use. (A good cure for stator support to Drive clutch sealling ring burn up.) as well as after we started using it everytime we went to set up the band adjustments none was required. Improvement was dramatic as it can stand the heat well. 
In the engine it is a different story. First we now question the extended period between oil changes . Oil appears to get just as dirty and we know for a fact that oil itself does not wear out. so why run the engine with dirty oil. Secondly if regular recommended oil changes are done there will be virtually no build up of crap in the engine. 
Synthetics because of the fact that they have all similar sized molecules as opposed to mineral oils which have average range sized molecules lack the bounce or spring  cushioning that mineral oil give the bearings. We were given some oils to test by a MAJOR oil company in Old Relaible. We tore the engine apart before and after to see. Before was after a years racing with Oils recommended as per my book. After was after a couple of weekends. I was shocked to see that wear with the synthetic was accelerated as opposed to the previous oil. Not from a lack of lubrication it seemed but from a shock related problem. Now if we had used a 40 or 50 wt Synthetic i think it would have been find but the manufacturer insisted that we could use thier 15W 50. He was wrong. 
Currently I use Synthetic in my V10 Ram which will turn 10 years old on Wednessday. I used synthetic in the first PT cuiser but this one i (PT GT Turbo)am using mineral based product . Engine is quieter. (see above)
If your a real diehard synthetic fan, go for it. These however are things to think about. Often that old rule is a real good one. If it Aint broke don't fix it!
BTW there aint no synthetic goin in my Max Wedge!
