Andy, The most common mistake people (me included) is too much cam. Small
blocks are more sensitive to large cams and carbs than big blocks. A 275 degree
(advertised) cam is a pretty good all round cam. High lift won't affect idle
like high duration will. I put a 272 degree, .510 lift cam in my 10 to1 460
Ferd and it runs strong and will idle at 500 rpm. My 451 stroker has a 275
degree duration and .525 lift. A single 4bbl in the 600-725 range on a dual plane
manifold should do the job. 3.50 ish rear gear is good for cruising. You
need RPM and light weight for a drag car. RPM = $$$ and less streetability. But
what do I know??? I guessing it's a poly, therefore see Gary P. My
brother's 70 Cuda 440 with 3.90 gears, crossram, 12.5 to one. and mega cam runs in the
low 11's. He drives it to some shows, but gas is 4.00 a gallon, it runs hot
on the freeway, and you can't hear yourself think in it. He trailers it to
most tracks. My computer program shows my 451 car to run about a second slower
in the quarter. But I'll be able to drive it all day and enjoy it. Joe
