  A shadetree fix is to remove the instrument panel and get at the speedo 
cable.  Tear a corner out of a heavy duty zip lock baggie and slip the corner 
over the end of the cable.  Rubber band the bag corner tightly and put a couple 
of oz of trans fluid in bag.  close bag and suspend higher than cable.  Trans 
fluid will drain into cable, hopefully fixing it.  Use motor oil for manual 
trans.  Joe
