Hi all, A bit off topic for this group, but was wondering if anyone here at experience with the 318 Poly and starters. Apparently there was a 3-bolt and a 2-bolt version? Are they interchangeable? My engine builder is working on a super rare 318 Poly Marine for a Italian boat project (the one that James Bond drove in Venice). The bell housing is a 2-bolt but the starter he has is a 3-bolt. The 2-bolt was apparently 6v only? Anyways, he is trying to use a newer starter because he needs 12v and the starter was reversed for the 318 Poly Marine application. The starter seems to be grinding somewhere on the flex plate or flywheel. Maybe a spacer is needed? Listening to that old direct-drive starter, the starter itself sounds ok but smells like it is under stress so I’m thinking it is binding up possibly. Thought I’d throw this out here to see if anyone has any ideas on what to look for.
