Replacing the tank in the race car today and just thought I pass on some observations. (replaced the stock tank with a reproduction Spectra tank)
Pumped out the gas tank using the factory pickup system using an electric Carter pump hooked directly to the pickup - that took out 7.5 gals. Then we dropped the tank. There was another 2.5 gallons in there. Sitting at the bottom of the bucket was a half a thimble full of copper shavings. No idea where that came from.
So, why do I carry 2.5 gallons of gas I can't use - how do you set the float? And, where did the copper shavings come from? Bear in mind this was the original tank from 1965.
And, a word of warning. The new gas tank straps seem to be just a little too short. Man, what a PITA getting that strap bolted in. Needed a skyhook to stretch it enough to get to the hook bolt.
