Not a bad earth kind of erratic, just not regular on/off blinking...

I will have to pull things apart, I guess. But it's such a minefield under there with all those vacuum lines and so on, I hope I don't break too much!

I don't recall these type lights except for, as people have noted, a theft deterrent.

If you can see from below the dash try to follow the wire feeding the light. Or if you can easily, remove the control
panel to investigate.
