In the spring of 1971 I received my draft notice while living west of St. Louis. It was in the middle of the war and I was sure the Army would ship me directly to Nam so I enlisted in the Navy with an October induction date. I was driving a 64 Sport Fury with a weak 318. I was sure my life would be over soon and I wanted to make the best of the next four months so I planned a cross US and cross Canada trip. I hope this doesn’t get me banned from the group but I swapped my SP straight up for a 64 Econoline, moved everything I owned into it and drove 15,000 miles that summer. I missed Banff but went through Edmonton and Jasper NP on my way to Kamloops BC. It was a great trip and western Canada was a highlight. Downtown Banff reminds me a bit of the Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Edmonton I recall from 44 years ago. I retraced some of my route a couple of years ago with my wife in a rented Mustang convertible and this time I visited Banff. A lot has changed but the Canadians I met then and now are still some of the friendliest people in the world. PS – A week after I swapped vehicles I ran into the kid who got my SP. I had suggested to him that he take it easy on the car until he had someone look at the engine but he blew me off. It turned out he was on foot because he blew the engine a couple of days after he got the car.
