No it isn't technically necessary. The service manual shows and calls for going through the neutral switch hole IIRC, or maybe pulling the shift cable out enough to get in there that way, with a thin blade screwdriver to pop the cable retention spring clip out of its slot allowing you to pull the cable forward out of the socket. I just can't remember which way you go in. It is just that doing that without being able to see it, just by feel in other words, doesn't always go smoothly and one can pull the pan to be able to see what one is doing.
