The driver's side of the core goes to the connection closest to the radiator. So, the water pump pushes liquid thru the intake into the heater hose, through the heater core, then the fluid returns to the water pump through the other heater hose. This does sound like what you have. (I don't know why the other picture I linked had it the other way.) 

Are you sure the heater water valve and temperature sensor are functional? Check this article.
