Re: Re: 440 Crankshaft Question

Nico, I'll throw a wild guess out there that the marine crank is provisioned for outdrives and as such the alignment is unique?

Just a thought...

Jason, thanks for your info. I tried my flex plate on my old 68 440 (steel crank) and it clocks perfectly, tried the same plate on the Marine crank and it will not clock anywhere (got 2 holes to line up). A bit of further investigation shows there is a flexplate avilable with 2 bolt patterns from B& M (model 10237) but before we continue down that road thought I would see if anyone else has come across this.

Are you sure you "clocked" or correctly oriented the flex plate ? They did not change anything from forged to cays or at least I have never seen any difference and I have gone from forged to cast in my 440 block when I chewed up my forged crank I put in a cast crank and everything bolted rite up. Of course I changed the harmonic and had to rebalance the converter. Actually hauled everything in and had it rebalanced as I had polished and balanced the reciprocating assembly and the configuration lasted till.... Far as I know it's still running guy I sold the car to has not called me.  That was probably 10+ years ago

I am doing a 440 build with my son, it is a 1978 Marine engine and is externally balanced. When we tried to install a flex plate, we found out that the 6 bolt pattern is different than a internally balanced steel crank.  I realize that I have to use externally balanced flex plate for this application but I would have thought that Ma Mopar would not have used a different bolt pattern between cast/steel crankshafts. If both patterns are the same then my marine 440 has a unique pattern. Can any list member confirm my conclusions? Thanks in advance.
