Hey there Bob.  I can't remember offhand where I picked up the harness - I want to say  Kramer's but it was a few years ago.   I am a bit of an electrical junkie and was careful to rewire the entire car.   The new harness wasn't 100% match - wire colors don't always match - but most of the connections are close to the Service Manual schematic.  The source of the back-up lights (the white wire) is the main dash harness, at the wiper control (sounds like it is the same on your Polara). As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the only impact - and the desired one for now - when I disconnect the white wire from the wiper switch is the reverse lights go out.  But as I mentioned, the pushbutton unit and the transmission are out of the car.  I assumed, given the trans was out, that the lights would not work because somewhere there had to be a wire dangling where the back-up switch originally was.  The fact that the lights are on and the circuit is closed - without a back-up switch - is puzzling me.

Perhaps you could trace the (presumably) white wire from the back-up switch on your pushbutton unit and tell me where it goes?  My guess is it disappears back into the loom and pokes back out at the wiper switch.  But knowing that would if nothing else tell me I'm not nuts.
