I wonder if you shouldn't just get those headers ceramic coated at a powder coating shop?  As long as they don't have any holes it should be doable.  Cost me about $250 to have mine re-coated.  Cheaper than new ones!

Honestly, I think after you clean it up, you'll have a more positive outlook. I admit it's gonna take some time.
