1. He was adding racing fuel into his car
2. A spark from static electric caught the fuel on fire and POOF.

Every gas pump in WA state (and I assume other states too) has a sign on it to warn people....nobody reads it.

Static can build up on may types of cloth and surfaces.  Things like cotton, wool, nylon, coats, hats, pants, trunk liners, bed liners, and a million other things.  Dry, cold weather is a great time for static to build up and zap.  It's a bit hard for it to happen in the rain...but it can.

You can prevent static sparks by grounding your self before you mess with the gas cans.  Use fabric softener in your laundry to help your cloths not like static as much. put the closed gas can next to the car, touch the metal of the car with one hand and the gas can with the other hand.  open the can and get it ready to pour, but do it again. then pick it up to put the fuel in you car.  If you want to help save your home, life, buildings and the like.  Do this outside your garage.  No reason to put fuel in an enclosed building, where vapors and sparks can fly.  Use some common sense and you should be fine.  Oh yes, several FUEL fire extinguisher RIGHT next to you when you are doing this in case something goes wrong you can most likely put it out.  A large CO2 one works well....or any other suitable one for gas fires.

It's rare but it happens every year.  If you are wearing cloths that you KNOW make static electric don't mess with the fuel.  Go change your cloths.  Why tempt fate.Inline image 1Inline image 2

This happened right around the corner from my house. Guy was working in a 67 Belvedere, adding fuel, static charge, flash fire, everything destroyed. Had been working on the car for over 3 years and was basically done.

Everyone-PLEASE be careful and make sure you have fire extinguishers around, although in this case I'm note sure they would have helped.
