Well, it's DONE! This should (hopefully) be the last report on the
AZDart power steering. I contacted Borgeson about the hose problem and was told that I had the wrong p/s pump, their hoses only work with the later Saginaw pump. That was the first I'd heard of that - would have been nice to know last April when I bought the steering box. No-one could reasonably expect the manufacturer to supply hose kits for any combination of their steering box and whatever pump someone happened to use. I don't know what year Chrysler changed to the "late Saginaw" pump, but I would be surprised if Borgeson could not have gotten that info and made it known to purchasers of their Mopar modified G.M. p/s steering boxes. Sorry 'bout the rant.... Anyway, my buddy and I talked about cutting and splicing the hose to correct the clocking so that was the first thing he did this morning. He then topped up the pump reservoir, started the car, and ran the steering all the way left and right and discovered that the wheels vibrated several degrees back and forth with no steering wheel input. Another call to Borgeson (no toll free #) got the reply that they had seen that if the hoses were reversed, that they are different size hoses, and the return hose from the box was supposed to be connected to the port nearest the firewall. Oh, NOW they tell me that - and on my dime for the phone call! Again, it would have been nice..... So we changed the port assignment of the hoses and now have a correctly functioning power steering system in the AZDart for the first time in its life!! The only remaining questionable area that I've thought of is the splice in the pressure hose, which was made from a short piece of steel brake line with a small flare on each end, coated with super glue and with two screw-type hose clamps on each end. Not as pretty as I would like, but it's shown no signs of leaking or loosening when tested fully warmed up and wheels turned full lock in both directions several times. I will be discussing the easily avoidable installation issues with Borgeson and the ebay seller I got the box from. I will also have a real hydraulic shop duplicate our spliced pressure hose just to be sure. As always, thanks for all the helpful input! The project would have been more difficult without it.
