RE: Dual exhaust, side thread to what 4bbl

The point about the scavenging is a good one. My ~300 HP slant six had a
4-bbl, headers, and full 2.5" dual exhaust. While the thing could really get
up and go starting at 60 MPH, it really didn't have a lot off the line. I do
not recall now the rear end ratio. At any rate, I wanted to keep the thing
driveable for long highway runs. I brought this up with my favorite exhaust
guy, and his conclusion was that there was not enough back pressure at lower
RPM's.

The solution (which worked great) was actually to make plates that went
between the flanges of the headers and the exhaust pipe that restricted
flow. I never noticed a loss of power at higher RPM's, though timed runs or
a dyno may have. However, I did have noticeably more power from a dead stop,
and still got my 30+ MPG highway, so I was happy.

My conclusion was that when it comes to exhaust work, really knowing the
engine and it's application and working with a good exhaust man is going to
give up the best results...
