I find the "formula" to be a guideline. Although I have never consulted the "formula" when choosing a carb for my engines. Real world applications from many different engine combos are your best guide. A 600cfm carb is a good fit for a bone-stock or mildly cammed 318 Poly. A 500cfm will also work but is too small in my opinion. Jason is using a large 750-800cfm carb on his 256/.435" HP Cammed Poly 318 and it works well. I sent him a 440 RB engine OEM Carter AVS carb and it worked well on his 318 Poly. I use a Holley 850cfm Double Pumper on our Stroker Dyno engines and it works well for these large cube/large cammed Polys too.
I run an 850 Thermoquad on my 340 engine - perfect fit.
My recommendation is to go with a 600cfm Edelbrock on a stock cammed Poly or mildly cammed Poly with any of the four barrel offerings out there; will do well on our New Air Gap Poly also.

Don wrote that his carb size formula would work for street AND race applications.
Thanks, Gary H.
