Okay I think some of you are confused. I've been busy the last couple days and am reading the responses to my original question. I wasn't talking about manual transmissions. I was talking about automatics. As in how difficult would it be to swap in a 4 or 5 speed auto in place of the 727? Is it even possible to pit in a 4 or 5 speed tranny with the cable set up? I'm not gonna change my column. Like I said I saw somebody else throwing around the idea on some other site. Just figured I'd get some advice/opinions on the subject.

Well, they say that the weaknesses of the A833 4-speed are the step down in the mainshaft required for the overdriven gear and that the layshaft pin floats rather than being pressed into place. Some sources suggest a modification where you mill out the front hole and shrink in a bronze piece that you then machine for the tight fitting pin from the earlier A833s. I really don't know if it's important to use the cast iron housing (1974 overdrives only), but it would be more rigid. Personally, I would go out to a junkyard and look for an overdrive A833 in a slant 6 Pickup, put it in and try it. You've got your spigot size to worry about on your bellhousing still, unless you have a later model (1970+) with the larger input bearing, if you do your bearing retainer will swap over. If you find that fails, they you look at it again, or buy another cheapy to keep you going until you can afford the Jamie Passon version... which I think is something like $1200, isn['t it?
