I'm sure you'll find that either imbalance or joint problems have caused this...

I'd also say that gusseting is not necessary if things are right. Welding these things can create its own problems anyway, I'd simply get a replacement piece, check it out and fit it and go through the balance and the joints.

Of course, if there is imbalance, you should be able to feel it as you drive.

Do you still have ball & trunnion joints? If so, perhaps this is the ideal opportunity for you to find a '65 (one year only) transmission and change over to a slip joint and universals?
