Re: Broken bolt blues

Well, been a hectic time around here lately, but finally got around to putting some serious time in on the '63.  Ended up using Russell the tyre fryer's suggestion on centering a drill on what was left of the broken bolt.  Ended up drilling to size and re-tapping.  Got it put back together and running on Monday night,  no leaks.  Got it out again tonight and put some miles on, nice and dry. Bolts all pulled up nice and tight, so didn't expect any problems,, but you know how that can go.  So, now it's got a repaired radiator, new water pump, thermostat,  all new belts and  hoses, including power steering.  Really starts nice with the electronic ignition change over also.  That should prevent some problems for cruising this summer.  Not that there aren't more things to update, but it's a good start.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that had ideas on the bolt removal.  All of the ideas would probably work 90% of the time, but I've NEVER had one stuck this tight.
BTW,  I helped my buddy with a broken exhaust stud the other night in his 500 Cadillac engine in his Ford (yeah,, I know), Kelly Arnolds' candle wax routine worked excellent!
Had heard about it, but never tried it.  Crazy !

Hi all,
Well, did it this time.  Had to change the water pump in the 63, (383
engine) so while taking belts loose, (been on a long long time) I
didn't get a quarter turn on the bolt going thru the lower bracket on
the power steering pump when I heard the dreaded SNAP.  By the looks
of the part of the bolt that came out, it must go into a water jacket?
Now the one opposite on the alternator bracket feels the same, and
I'm not real wild about the one just above it either, although it has
moved a bit.  Hate to have 3 to repair.  Any bright ideas on getting
these out in one piece ?  Sure took the fun out of this project. :-(
