Look for an old-time tool rental store for the puller if you can't buy one right now. You'll probably buy one sooner or later. 

There are a couple of DIY MacGyver style pullers shown on http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/tech/BrakeDrums.html

The noise is not normal. Test for a wheel bearing and if you change 1 bearing change the other side as well for piece of mind. http://www.ehow.com/how_4862340_locate-wheel-bearing-noise.html gives one method to test wheel bearing noise. 

Fix the noise asap. A bad wheel bearing is dangerous to your health.
