Re: High Flow Thermostats

I am in Yuma, hotter than you by over 5 degrees in the summer. Your
problem is very similar to what I had. As the temperature
approached 100 degrees outside I started having over heating
problems. Never boiled over but the temperature got too high. When
it heads over 200 the radiator and thermostat has lost control. I
tried everything short of buying a new radiator with no improvement.
A shroud and electric fan was wasted money. I finally talked to an
old radiator guy who showed me that my re-cored radiator did not have
enough fins per inch and could not cool in the high tempertures of
Yuma. He asked who put the new core in the radiator, I told him it
was done in Arkansas where I built the car, he said it may work in
Arkansas but not in Yuma!

I went to US Radiator and got their copper 4-row unit, it looks stock
except for the lack of stampings on the top tank. The person I talked
to was wonderful and took the time to make sure that I did not have
any other problem with cooling, by the time I ordered the radiator I
was confident that what I was ordering would work.

Problem solved!

I have a non-stock 383, I can drive in 117 degree Yuma weather with no
problem. I took it on a 5,000 road trip 2 years ago back to the
Midwest from Yuma in August with absolutely no over heating problems.

I have no connection with US Radiator. You have a larger engine, I am
not suggesting that this is a cure but it worked for me. If you are
interested I can try to find the part number for the unit it bought
but would suggest that you talk to US Radiator and other radiator
companies and make your own decision. Don't talk to vendors, go
straight to the companies themselves. I have been told that aluminim
radiators are more cost effective and do a great job of cooling but I
wanted and have the stock look that I wanted.

Just my 2 cents worth.
