This is what I think I know: There are seals to keep the converter and tranny input shaft from leaking to the outside. However, by the same means that fluid is pumped from the tranny to converter, it can leak back over time untill the converter fluid level is below the input shaft area. Of course filling the tranny enough that all seals are continually under the fluid level..Therefor any weak seals will leak . I guess the choices are--put up with it and use a drip pan on the floor--start the engine every so ofter --put every seal in new.. Love those 4 speeds! 8-) .........................MO

This question interests me even though my ’64 Dodge is a four-speed car. Well…it will be…when (ever?) I get it back together. So if it’s normal for the converter to bleed down, it then shows this on the dipstick as overfull like Dennis mentions. Is there not a seal at the converter to prevent or minimize this bleeding down? I thought trans dipsticks were marked “DO NOT overfill”. I know It stands to reason to not fill beyond total capacity and in this case it is redistributing the fluid back to the converter where it needs to be but isn’t this harmful repeatedly over time? As you might have guessed, I’m not very knowledgeable with the workings of the automatic trans.
