Merwin: There is an odd anomaly that you may find upon stripping the paint on your K-Frame, master cyl mounting plate, lower control arms, and struts. On some of our cars, particularly those from the west coast, you will find that these items were painted a sort of dark navy gray primer color...not semi-flat or semi-gloss black. This was clearly the case on my 64 Belvedere, which began its useful life in Salinas, CA. I'm sure most of the guys in this mail list have seen this also. It has also been confirmed by Wally Breer of the Plymouth Owners Club, Wally lives in Oregon (or is it Washington state, can't recall at the moment) and serves as the tech director for 1963 cars. I could not find this paint so I color matched some acrylic enamel...it is too shiny, but it should fade a little from the heat and the color is dead on. Just a footnote for ya...best of luck, Donny, 64 Belvedere > To: 1962to1965mopars@xxxxxxxxxx > From: bb64d440@xxxxxxxxxxx > Subject: RE: engine compartment > Date: Wed, 22 Sep 2010 22:29:24 -0400 > > > > > There was a good article I read a “long” time ago on a complete “factory correct” restoration to a ’64 Dodge Polara convertible. I think I may still have it but don’t know just where it is right now but I’ll look for it. In the meantime, I remember the article was impressive by the amount of info it covered. As Akron Don Gallimore stated, the undersides of the hood and deck lid, all hinges, doors, doorframes and jams are body color as well as the firewall, inner fenders along with that part of the steering column assembly, the radiator support and the (bolted in) hood latch bar. The K member and steering box (I believe) should be a semi-gloss black. Steering components may have received a quick “hit or miss” shot of black paint but most likely were left in their raw metal state. Concerning the front suspension torsion bars, I’m fairly certain these were well protected against rust with black paint as the factory manual stresses not to scratch or nick them or if damaged to immediately smooth and repaint. > As for the radiator, they are a somewhat glossy black but they should only be painted with a “radiator black” paint. Regular paint is too thick and actually acts as an insulator thereby reducing its ability to shed the heat like it is supposed to. > Dave Bailey > > > To: 1962to1965mopars@xxxxxxxxxx > > From: vulcan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > > Subject: engine compartment > > Date: Wed, 22 Sep 2010 20:16:58 -0400 > > > > > > > > I'm planning to paint my '65 Coronet this winter, and am wondering what gets painted the body color besides the sheet metal. Suspension components, steering, radiator, etc. I want it to look like it did from the factory. ..........Merwin > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] > > > > > > ---- > > Please address private mail -- mail of interest to only one person -- directly to that person.
