Re: sending unit

I have been reading every E mail regarding the fuel gauges. I have a fuel gauge problem in MS Cruiser. I have a stock fuel sender unit that I bought from Kramer. The better, more expensive, made in USA one. So I was told
I am using autometer gauges....straight 12V
When I bought the sending unit Cindy told me to use the 80-100 gauge. That is a GM gauge. (please correct me if I am wrong on the ohms) I did ask the ohms of the sending unit as I knew I was going to use autometer not stock. I fill the tank full. Gauge goes to full. Does not move off full till you are down to 5 gallons in the tank. Drops rapidly at 8-10 mpg. At 1/8 tank you are walking. I will not run out of gas. About a year ago I started a discussion on the ohms reading of our senders. The 4/74 is correct. I beleive this after reasearch. Light goes off, wrong gauge!! I bought a Chrysler ohm gauge from Autometer. Swapped gauges. NOTHING !! Went back to old relayable...if the gauge reads 1/2 STOP IMMEDIATELY>>BUY FUEL !! I have tried grounding, nothing more that holding up a wire while wife operates key and reports results. Nothing ,, but maybe not a good ground? Gary H made a post regarding the ground strap. I looked in my shop manual no info. I never had one on MS Cruiser. Now it has been explained better. Someone also made a post regarding the contact on the coil of the sending unit..need to check this. So Bill I do suffer your pain too! If it makes you feel better, no gauge on the Petty Car, just open the 8 gal fuel cell and look. My Rambler has a note pad on the rear view mirror instead of fuzzie dice, fill up every 200 miles.
Ain't are old cars FUN? As my buddy Rich says "Having Fun Yet?"

Ya the ring, not reliable! Your car had a ground strap made of heavy tin
that snapped over the fuel line and the nipple on the sender bridging the
rubber hose thus the ground from the factory. A lot of people removed them
not realizing what they are or they just biodegraded and fell off. You may
get lucky and get a temporary ground through the straps and the locking ring
but the slightest corrosion will cancel that out, much like on a dirty
battery terminal. It is called electrolytic corrosion caused by two
dissimilar metals in contact with each other. The corrosion is a good
insulator! Look at it like the metals don't like each other and build up a
barrier so they don't have to touch each other! I believe Gary H had a link
to the re-pop of the factory ground bridge on here not long ago if you want
to go that route. For now what I would do (It ant pretty but) is get two
hose clamps and a eyelet and a long piece of wire that need not be insulated
Hose clamp the wire to the nipple between the hose and base of the sender,
jump over the hose to the fuel line clean it up and hose clamp the wire to
the fuel line. That should work as a ground just fine but, grounding it to
the frame also will be even better. That will give you a three point ground
if your with me! Now if you have a flashing test light at the wire in the
back and a good connection to your sender I bet your gauge will work! Let
me know how this works.

Herb
The unit is supposed to be grounded by the locking ring but it could be that
it is not working.
I just now remembered that after I had the underside of the car sand blasted
I then painted it with a por 15 type of paint and I also lined the top of
the tank area with rubber, so it could be that I don't have a ground....Doh.

I will attach a separate ground wire today.
Thanks
Bill

Are you grounding the sender to the fuel line or frame, or
both? I'm
talking grounding the Sender it's self not the tank!
The sender is usually
insulated by the O ring I belive you said you had a
flashing light when
testing at the sender wire at the back?

I am to the point that I am really ready to take a BFH to
my 65 Coronet.
I replaced the gas tank sending unit and the gauge and
still no reading.
It just can't be 2 new sending units in a row can it??
Thoughts???
Thanks
