Works well but always makes me hungry...

Gallons of off-brand vinegar (basically about 5-7% acetic acid) can be found
cheap in some dollar/clearance stores.  I seem to remember seeing large
containers at Sams and wondering to myself "how much salad can you really
eat?"

On a related note, we use pickle drums from a local eatery for liners for
our tumbling machine - parts come out clean and shiny... and smelling of
dill!  Anyway, check with local restaurants for 5 gallon drums - the lids
have a large o-ring for sealing and many have a handle/bail for easy
carrying.  Some give them away, some charge a buck or two.  For larger
"tanks" we use laundry tubs - Menards has tubs on sale right now for $19.

Steve,

I used white vinegar on my axles back in May and it worked very well.  For
the first day or so I wondered if it were true - seemed like nothing was
happening.  But after a bit longer, it was foaming and they came out
surprisingly clean.  It's a nice non-toxic alternative for rust removal.
