Keeping the pushbuttons still means (I believe) either the poly trans with adaptor for the hemi, or a big block '62-'64 trans, or '65 trans with the shift comb replacement.  Imperial Services was working at one time on a way to keep the pushbuttons with later trans but I don't know if they got that done.  As far as motors, you can match motor to desired result divided by price, so to speak.  The 440 is the cheaper and easier build, and you can even run MW stuff if you still want the look.  A&A even makes the intake to match the stock 440 head ports.  Real max wedge blocks are expensive and as Donnie said, most won't know the diff, and most who do wouldn't criticize anyway, it will be cool with a 440 anyway.  My correct 413 max wedge block had been bored so much, I had to sleeve it back to size, and of course still needed custom made pistons to the tune of $850 for the set, although I did have a set of NORS pass-car flattops if I wanted to cheapen up.  The 392 will be a little harder to find and more expensive to buy than a 440, and you'll be a little limited in both choice of parts and street power, but definately will be cool.  I think the way to go may be the complete long block kit from hot heads for that choice.
