318 Oil Pan Gasket (New Qustion)

OK, since I'll have all my steering and suspension parts off my front end, I've decided to try to stop my oil leak by replacing the oil pan gasket. I've got a few questions:

1) I have noticed thare are 2 types of gaskets. 4 piece gaskets (two flats for the sides, 2 concave for the ends). I have also seen a 1 piece gasket. Is one better than the other? 4 piece vs. 1 piece? ? ?

2) Would it be helpful to use a sealer like Permatex along with the gasket, or could it be done by just using Permatex only?

3) The book calls for removing the engine from the transmission at the lower left. Will I need to do that or jack up the engine any? If I jack the engine up, where would be the best contact point for that.

I think that is it for now. Thanks for the help! ! ! !
