Hi Bill,
That is an aftermarket filter that was usually used by transmission 
rebuilding shops to trap any debris that could be in the cooler and lines 
after a rebuild of a transmission. There is a number stamped on the rail by 
the shift linkage that will give you the information that you need. If you 
let me know the number, I can identify the year for you.
