Had the same problem with my '59 New Yorker - if you're having this work
done be sure to let the upholstery shop know that the padding needs to be
thin in these spots.  The trim fit okay with longer screws but if you pushed
the button in too far it would drop behind the trim plate!  I got fairly
good at holding the button up and hooking it on the faceplate but lost the
reverse button one night at a cruise and plugged up traffic for a while!

FINALLY.. got the dash pad installed.. :)

you would think that areas where transmission buttons or heater controls
are, they would be light on padding.. 

If any of you do this, be sure to have an exacto-knife handy to  remove
padding where it is too thick to re-attach chrome pieces
