Here is the skinny on chokes. When a choke is et up right. you go put ijn the morning and push the pedal down at least half way THEN RELEASE IT! You do that because the fast idle linkage has steps that keep the choke from opening because they are connected directly together. When you relase the pedal the choke closes and the fast idle cam is on its highest step. Now with you throttle foot stuck in you ear (because you do not want it on the gas pedal because that messes up auto choke operation. you turn the key till it starts which usuaully wont be much more than WUMPO WUMPOWUMPO WUMPOWUMP. The engine should fire and run at fast idle (1700 to 2000 RPM ) on its own without touchingthe pedal . o If it is loading up the choke pull off is not pulling thechoke off enough and if it stalls the pull off is opening it too much. The choke should say on long enough to provide some sort of fast idle for at least 5 minutes. (On your watch! fine minutes in you head is often about 50 seconds. ) Then if you blip the throttle it should drop to normal idle and the choke blade should be comletley pen. if not something is not right and needs correcting.I dont know of choke adjustment and repair can be done by description but I am willling to try. If you have a big camand such forget it and just mass the heck out f it till it is almost drowned then turn the key. BTW Mashing or pumping the throttle while cranking is the best way to get a poor start. you are using up fuel before there is enough there so it doesnt reposnd. If youre pumping dont be cranking. If youre cranking dont be pumping. On a car with an inactive choe crank to prime the float bwls , stop them pump the pedal to the floor slowy (I SAID SLOWLY not that stupid wiggle thing. )three times then hold the throttle down 1/3 of the way and turn the key. it will start. You might on a monstoer have to do that twice. So there it choke and no choke starting. If you have a tendancy to pump while you cranking hit you foot with a large hammer. That will stop that tendancy.

Factory owner's manuals were written before our gasoline was laced with ethanol. The added ethanol causes the gas to evaporate faster, and hurts mileage, among other things. 62pluckedchicken@xxxxxxxxx wrote:My starting problem sounds like what Paul described.. I have to pump it abiut 20 times to get ignition.. I read the owners manual and the half-way down just doesn't cut it.----Please address private mail -- mail of interest to only one person -- directly to that person.
