The red spray gasket adhesive sounds like a great idea, I will try that soon.

Try putting a socket behind the hole and then hammer it. A socket will also fit better between the raised ridges between the bolt holes, and if you use a ball peen hammer it will cause the bolt holes to push out ever so slightly away from the engine side. As for sealing the gasket, I've tried everything and have had extraordinary luck with that red, spray gasket adhesive.
