I the next two weeks I am converting an early Hemi manifold to holey from 
wcfb. If I think of it I will take photos. A spacer is used but they need 
more than just that .

Sean,

Only problem with using NO spacer is if you have an early WCFB
manifold. There's basically no way to bolt a modern carb to that
manifold without it. The bolt pattern for the manifold is WAY too
small. I'll round some pics up for you too.
