I usually try to use a brass punch to avoid any unnecessary sparks

A friend of mine that has every tool you can think  of had one.  It kind of

looks like a large thin open end wrench  that fits over the tabs.  It does

work well if you have a  persnickety ring but that's about 1 in 50 or more.

That's a tool you  get a Mechanic that has  everything!!
