Neal,

Run your Torqueflite at 170degrees or less for long-life.
If the fluid was ice cold that would be best; trans fluid temp is not like engine oil that needs a specified amount of "heat"

does anybody know what temperature a torqueflite is supposed to run at ideally?
 thinking of putting in a trans temp gauge.

Personally I think bigger is better. I did like you suggested in that I
set my trans cooler, which is even bigger, off to the drivers side
behind the grill and kinda angled downward. It's still somewhat in front
of the radiator but I don't see any problems from that and the trans
cooling is very important.
