Yup you are correct!  But, running the two smaller wires is the same as
running 1 larger or heaver wire correlating to less stress on the overall
system.  Less chance of crispy critters under the dash!

I'm doing the ammeter removal rewire and in the diagram that comes from 
http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/amp-gauges2.shtml it shows 
Splicing the red and black together that are on the back of the ammeter. 
To me this is redundant as they are spliced at the starter relay also 
And the red wire doesn't appear to have any other points it suppllies 
Other than the ammeter. I'd just delete the red wire altogether and save 
Another splice. Seems cleaner to me.
