Re: 1963 Fender Tag Engine Code??

For a 1963 model, it matters not if it is a 330, 440 or Polara - the engine availability was the same for all three 1963 Dodge series.

Although the engine code on the tag is "02", etc., the full sales code is "502". Thus the zero does mean something - it is the second digit of the full sales code.

The standard engine on the Valiant and Lancer was the 170 slant six, on a Plymouth 6 or Dodge 6 - the 225 slant six, and on a Plymouth V8 or Dodge V8 - 318 V8. Thus if there is no engine code on the Lynch Road or Hamtramck cars, the car would have one of the base engines as listed above.

The list of engines for 1963 :

Sales
Code Engine Tag No.

502 225-cid 6 02
503 361-cid V8 03
504 383-cid V8, 2-bbl 04
505 383-cid V8, 4-bbl 05
506 413-cid V8 06
509 426-cid V8, 415bhp 09
519 426-cid V8, 425bhp 19

The 225-cid slant six was optional on the Valiant and Dart, and as the 318 was not an optional engine on any car, no number appears for it in lists.

The Los Angeles tags apparently had a single digit, and thus the codes would be "2", "3", "4", "5" or "6". As the 426-cid engines were not installed in LA-built cars, "9" was not used and there was no need to have a code for either 509 or 519 engines.

The Hamtramck plant had the engine codes under QR, thus the code under the Q would be either "0" or "1". And the codes under the R would be "3", "4", "5", "6" or "9" if the Q was "0" and only "9" if the Q was "1"

Which leads to the question, what appeared on the Lynch Road tag if the engine sales code was 519? Did both 509 and 519 engines have "9" under the A with no way of determining which vesion of the 426 is under the hood?

I'm lost now .... a 318 according to what you wrote is a 07.. so what you're saying is a 0 just means nothing and that it was a standard base model 318 engine? but my car is a 63 Dodge 440 not a Polara...

These numbers will appear in two digit format on Hamtramck and Lynch Road
tags, and a single digit on Los Angeles tags. Not listed here is a 170cid
six because if an A-body is equipped with this engine, the engine code area will be blank, indicating the standard engine for that model. Also, Polara's and Belvedere's came standard with a 318cid V8, so it would also be blank if
so equipped.

So it looks like the 0 under Q is a 318? Wouldn't it be 04 or 05 for a 383.

Engine Lynch Rd
Hamtramck

145hp 225 1bbl 02
230hp 318 2bbl 07
265hp 361 2bbl 03
305hp 383 2bbl 04
330hp 383 4bbl 05
415hp 426 2x4bbl 09
425hp 426 2x4bbl 19
