Hi All, DId the very same thing here.my SG axles (in 742 case had trashed threads). I found a rear ('63, non SG) i ground just a bit off of the tips (it took a while) but worked out fine.

Axle 2070573 - 741 case w/o SG 30 1/2" Axle 2404050 - 742 case SG 30 7'16" You need to shorten the 30 1/2" axle 1/16" by machining or grinding. Careful marking and grinding took 1/2 hour each axle.
