I'm not a welder guru either, but I have used a Lincoln welder that is about the same as the clarke you are looking at.  It worked fine for almost all my needs with Trunk pan, floor pan, etc... If you need to get into welding on the frame...use the gas and consider a bigger welder.

I have heard of no complaints from the Clarke welders either.  JM2C
