turn signal - switch alignment? or adjustment needed?

Great talk about the parking lights and turn signals.
They are prone to lots of gremlins, apparently.
In my Valiant, the right turn signal operates fine, but the left signal only
blinks the dashboard indicator if I press and hold the signal control down.
I really need to do some full-scale troubleshooting, and get my Wife to
stand around the car and tell me if the signals work on all corners, and
under different conditions (headlights on, brake lights on, parking lights
on) but I wanted to know if this sounds like an adjustment or alignment
problem with the switch that maybe somebody else has seen. Maybe it needs a
shim, or something.
I might remove my steering wheel's center ornament, because it takes a
beating every time I remove/replace it to pull the steering wheel.
thanks
