I think the FSM says to?adjust the rod length to just meet the ball stud then make?the rod a turn longer, so no pressure on the lever at idle.

I seem to recall the procedure is to adjust the kickdown by having 
someone press the gas pedal fully to the floor; then synchronize the 
kickdown linkage so that the lever on the trans is fully engaged.
